Question Speedometer not working.

I just bought a 1998 ford f150 4.6L, Standerd Tranny. The Speedometer does not work. On the Driver side of the transmission near the rear, there are two wires going into a plug. There is a hole next to were the wires plug into that looks like something should go there. I would appriciate any help to get the speedo working again.

thanks

Test Drive

You should always take a vehicle for a test drive. Now it is unknown how many miles are on the truck all together. I would contact the person you bought the truck from and make them fix it... Unless otherwise noted in the p/s it is a criminal law in Mass to sell a vehicle over 700 dollars that doesnt have a working speedo. Good luck

That plug on thre Transmission is for the VSS (vehicle speed sensor). The outlet next to it is not for anything, don't worry about that.

I'm sorry I don't know why your speedo doesn't register. Just wanted to rule out what I could.

You can test that the VSS is receiving a signal with the use of a voltmeter. More in depth tests on this sensor need to be done by a dealer.

If you don't already have a repair manual, the Haynes is more descriptive than the Chiltons but the Chiltons has more thorough test procedures.
