Question A bump as it goes into 2nd gear.

I have a 99 5.4 with Auto Trans that bumps as it slips into 2nd gear. Is it a trany problem or rear end?. It only will do it at light to medium throtle and only 50% of the time. As the trany slips into 2nd you can feel a little bump, but not in any other gear. What could it be?

Sound like the tranny bro. The rear gears won't cause that on acceleration...deceleration is another story.

I wonder if this could be the slip yoke. You may be getting just enough torque at this shift to cause it to move back. I think it's been said here that you can lub it to get relief. Usually the bump happens when going from reverse to forward, changing position of the yoke. Does this make any sense?

Have you changed your transmission fluid ? Owners manual says to change at 30,000 miles. When the filter starts getting dirty it will cause a hard shift. Be sure you drain torque convertor and replace filter. No simple flush and fill at the quick lube.

This is not the first thread that's talked about this.

You leave the line (from a stop light/sign), and begin rolling? You get to about 10 miles an hour, and decide you need to go faster? You give it an extra amount of throttle, and the engine revs? But, all the sudden, it up shifts to 2nd with a slide bang?

Your transmission was designed for a GIRL. I don't want to go much further into that reason. However, I can tell you, there's nothing wrong with your transmission. That's how Ford designed it. You can fix that by buying a computer that will reprogram the shift characteristics (like the Superchip). If you're not happy with that mod, you can buy and install a valve body shift kit.

Yes, I'm promoting both of these products because I have pretty much the same truck. And I experienced the same problems you have. And I bought the Superchip first. Very happy with the HP and TQ, and the tranny shifts. But like I still want more HP, I still wanted better shifting characteristics. So I bought the Baumann kit. "Fun" to install. The results were very pleasing.

Nope, Not buying that last one. Although I agree the trany shifts a little soft and smooth wich I don't mind because this is no sports car, I have owned this truck for two years and it just started doing this. Slip yoke sounds good. I took it to the dealer and they put it on the computer and nothing showed. It is not a slip into gear thing at all. At half throttle or less you can feel a bump after it goes into 2nd. A pronounced thud felt in the truck that was not there the first two years. Not a shifting characteristic for sure. I wanted some help getting the dorks down at the dealer pointed in the right direction. They did not feel it when they test drove. It's doing it more of the time now so I will take back. I felt it the first time it went into 2nd gear leaving their shop. Maybe the TechGuy could get involved if he is out there? He knows everything..lol

Exclamation

I had the same thing going on about a year ago. I had changed the fluid at 30k(complete flush) and it started about 40k. I've had the fluid changed twice since then and it seems to have gone away. I had it at the dealer for it once, and they could not find anything. About a week later the tranny started to shudder on the 1/2 shift. No help yet on the shudder, but hey the slipping stopped. I'm going back to the dealer for one more try before the 75k warranty is up. (shudder) Gonna try to get them to ride with me this time, maybe they will give me a torque convertor after it's all said and done,,,,,98

I posted a thread about this around a month ago.

My truck would "Bump/Bang/Clunk" into 2nd under your exact scenario. Eventually my check engine light came on.

Took it to the dealer and they first replaced the valve body (Cheaper under waranty) which didn't fix it. Took it back the next day and they replaced the whole computer!(not just a re-flash) It doesn't do it any more.

Good luck and feel free to email me if you have any additional questions.

Peace-

My 99 does the exact same thing as yours. Clunks between first and second. It has gotten progressively worse in the past few months. It seemed to start doing this ever since they put in the FQR due to piston slap. I took the truck in twice when it was still under warranty and they couldn't find anything. However now it has gotton worse and I feel it needs to be taken care of.

Again I also agree that this is NOT the way this trans is supposed to shift because it didn't do this before. It started within the past 10,000 miles and is getting louder, more frequent, and more noticeable.

Please let me know what you determine.
