Ford f150 2002 5.4l xlt. So the othet day i was in reverse and gave it a little gas and i heard rumbling inside the trans and stopped and later came back i started it up and 1st gear high revved and shift 2nd was short and it would slip out of 3rd and couldnt go faster than 20 mph. Side note i had a chip in my truck witch changed thr gear shift and i tuned it back to stock and the next day is when the trans failed. Also side it has 168k miles on it.

 

Yeah, this is not good. Time to either rebuild or replace it.

Just had this same issue about two months ago. Time for a rebuild. I had mine rebuilt with heavy duty parts for $1800. Save the labour costs and remove it yourself and bring it to a shop.

 

There are a few good places that will build a truly high quality transmission with a converter for just under the price you mention. Shipped even.
