If they are the same length, I think they will. The truck may have a longer tail shaft? But, I'm just guessing here. I do remember some discussion on the Mark VIII forum about using a 99 or newer F150 transmission in the Marks because there were some improvements made in 99. Hopefully, one of the trasmission gurus will chime in.

Physically it will fit.
The 96 is an inferior transmission though in a couple of ways. Likely not an issue if you drive it easily.
The biggest issue is that the electronics are different. You will need to remove the valve body on both the transmissions and swap the electronics, including the case connector, over from your transmission to the 96 to make it work in your truck. So at minimum you are going to need a valve body gasket.
