4 wheel drive grinding noise

I have a 2007 F-150 4x4, 5.4xlt, 90,000 miles. I noticed this morning a rubbing sound coming from the front end of my truck with a slight vibration in the stearing wheel. This sound got louder when I would turn the wheel to the left or right when going around corners at approx. 35mph. My first thought was that my break pads where rubbing but an inspection showed them to be fine. I then engaged the 4 wheel drive in a parking lot. While moving in a straight line at slow speeds my truck felt like I was driving with the emergencey break on. When I would turn to the left or right the grinding was loud and my truck would come almost to a complete stop.

I am reading that the IWE system could be the culpret with my 4 wheel drive not being engaged or disengaged completely. I am wondering if what I am discribing is not something more major, transmision issue. Am I causing damage by driving it? Are there things to check that would point to what the issue might be?

Thank you
