1995 F150 extracab 4x4 xlt.....overdrive light blinking

Hello..
My overdrive light just came on and blinked for no reason. I was unable to shut it off by pressing the button. It soon after went out on its own after about 2 minutes. The day before the light came on blinking once again but did not stop until I shut the truck off. Strange. Just want to know if anyone else has experienced or is experiencing this as well.I have the E40d transmission. Any help or advice would be highly appreciated .thanks in advance..

You need to read out the EEC codes. When the OD light flashes, it indicates a fault and will set a code (just like the CEL).

You need a code reader that can read Ford EEC - I know one of the O'Reilly's here can do it. I haven't seen an Autozone that can. You have the last year before OBD2, so a standard OBD2 code reader can't do it.

Otherwise, there's a way to do it by bridging a couple pins in the underhood diagnostic connector and count the flashes of the CEL, that's pretty cumbersome.

When my OD started flashing, I also noticed a hard shift between 1st and 2nd (auto trans). Fault codes said speed sensors on drive shaft and rear axle were out. Real problem ended up being a tranny rebuild. Even that didn't solve the shift problem. The solution to that was a new computer.

Can't wait to hear what yours ends up being. Hope its just a speed sensor.

always blinking now..

So my or light now blinks on off anytime I drive the truck...The light comes on immediately when I reach 22 mph no matter what (warm and cold)....the shifting hasn't been too bad still getting a little (500) rpm surge between 40-50 mph no higher than 2600 rpm....does this sound familiar to anyone, still haven't gotten to a stealership or found a mechanic who word I trust...O'Reilly's here in California are not allowed to check codes or at least that's what the guy's telling me..any help is highly appreciated..
Thanks,
Ray .....Orange County

Follow Mark's link and pull the codes yourself.

You are correct - the mechanic's union in CA has been able to prevent parts stores from code reading.
