Lost Reverse

New here,be gentle. Anyway, I have been looking all over the net about this and found a lot of info and I'm sure the answer is in here somewhere. First, I have a 2007 F-150 supercrew 4x4, 5.4, lifted etc. Auto transmission. Was backing up a trailer the other day and, clank, no reverse. It drives fine, all forward gears work fine. So, what I understand is there is a band for reverse, when you put it in reverse something pushes down on it and away you go (simplified). So,my question is how much should I expect to shell out for this repair ? Going to talk to a transmission guy today. I live in California.

Broken snap ring on the rev. piston. I believe this is the fix from what I have seen here.

I just dropped it off at the shop. What is a fair price to get this work done ? Also, how do I make sure this doesn't happen again?

Heard from the shop today. No metal shavings in the pan.If it's just a fix $800-$1700, rebuild $2500-3500.I just told them to go for it, what can you do.I asked around, he is good and from what I am told Honest.

Just an update, got the tranny fixed. The guy rebuilt it.He said since he was in there, at 150000 miles,it was a good idea. It's a piece of mind. $2800 it may sound like alot and it is but it could have been worse.Back on the road......

Well I'm no expert, but what I did was ask around about a good transmission guy. When I say a good transmission guy, I mean fair and honest and does good work. A friend has had this guy rebuild 3 tranny's for him and done a great job. All I can say is ask around. Good luck.
