Shift linkage or range sensor may not be engaging properly and it's locking you into drive or reverse.

The range sensor can't do this. It is a mechanical problem.
If the linkage is going to every position your forward clutch has failed. When it wouldn't go into reverse or overdrive that most likely was the forward clutch welded itself together. With the forward clutch always applied it won't go backwards, and it won't go into reverse. Now I suspect the forward has finished failing, so reverse works again, but no forward.
I think it's time to stick a fork in it. This trans is done.
