Truck wont allways stay in park

Have a 03 Sport trac that when I put it in park sometimes it wont go all the way in.
today i put it in park like normal and got out and i heard a clicking noise and the truck started to roll backwards.

I know it was in park because they key wont release without it.

any ideas what could be the problem? its my wife's truck and i need to get it fixed ASAP

Damn that sucks big time

Bump to the top so your truck don't roll down a hill or something

Any services done to the trans? Could there be something below that got jammed in and is blocking it

Column shift? If it's like a F-150, there are Torx bolts in the column that could be loose.

Ford was sued back in the 70's because the transmissions were coming out of park and running over people. You probably have something loose in the linkage or steering wheel if it is column shift.

its a column shift and you sorta and to push it a little harder than i would think you should to get it into park.
and like I said when i put it in park it released the key, and i heard a clicking like a card in bike spokes.
and it slowly started to roll.

where are the torx bolts located? and could it be the linkage.
i ordered a repair manual today but its going to be a week before it gets here.

does anyone have information on how to fix the linkage or adjust it if thats what's needed

Lay under the dash on the driver's side. Look up the steering column. There are two Torx (#30) bolts that hold the shift cable bracket to the shift tube. These bolts tend to loosen.

And/or the shift tube has broken. Glc is right, it has the same setup as the 92-03 F-150's.

ok, Let me just start this by saying thank you all for your responses.

Secondly after climbing under the steering column in a space that clearly was not designed for a 6'3 250lb guy. More along the lines of a mechanic oompa loompa
The torx bolts were in fact loose.after tightening them it seems to have corrected the issue.
hopefully that was it.
