Reinforcement plate for VB on 4r70w

I had the servo retaining ring snap into pieces and was in the process of fixing it when I notice that the reinforcement plate on the one side of the separation plate has a small puncture. Will this effect anything or am I good to go. There are 3 grooves on the underside of the smaller reinforcement plate. Ford doesn't sell the part so I'm kinda at a loss as to how to proceed

Does the puncture go all the way through?

ya its right threw, Directly in the center where the servo prolly smashed into it. Id post a picture but it says that "you may not post attachments" under posting rules. It is fairly small but is directly in the center grove on the other side. ford doesnt sell the part and brazing it scares me that if the braze ever fails that Ill have a piece of metal rolling around in there again.

I might visit a transmission shop tomorrow to see if they got an old one kicking around. Other than that Im fresh outta ideas.

Ya I'm not using photo bucket. Normally with a vbforum such as this I can just add or manage an attachment in my post. Prolly disabled because people were uploading huge photos? Anyways it's the reinforcement plate directly under the OD servo. Puncture is right threw it about 1mm x 2mm in size. It's smack dab in the center effecting the center channel on the opposite side.

Any ideas to fix or replace it?

are you talking about the 2 round plates that bolt to the valve body?

Follow the instructions in the thread, but where it says "albums", replace that with "garage". You don't have to use Photobucket.

I got one from a tranny shop. Gave it to me for free, but it was the smaller of the two plates that bolt through the top of the valve body. Once assembled it is directly under the OD servo. Mine had a small puncture straight thru it into one of the fluid channels.

For anyone else in the same boat I was not able to find a new replacement part so used was the only thing I could get

btw.. used plate works fine, its not normally a wearing part.

I have never heard of or seen this plate be worn or damaged, like you describe.

not saying it can't happen, though.

Thanks for digging for me. I fixed the broken c clip but I still don't have overdrive so I'm gonna attempt a rebuild once the weather gets a little nicer. I did all this outside in -20 Celsius weather and it was stressful to say the least.

Post #58 here shows some similar damage I experienced.

Cheers

replacing the broken C-clip is only part of the process. did you dig the broken piece(s) out of the OD servo valve as well?

Yep here's what did. Once I removed the valve body the servo fell right out and the snap ring was in about ten pieces. Opened the valve body and cleaned with brake cleaner. Found all the pieces for the snap ring and compared them to the new snap ring. I then used a flat head screw driver and made sure the valves moved freely. I replaced the gasket on the inside of the seperator plate and reassembled the valve body (i had removed the check ***** while cleaning so i hadreplant these back). Used the new used reinforcement plate.

I had the actual tool to compress the servo in place as I held the overdrive band in position and then installed the snap ring. Reassembled the valve body to the bottom of the transmission and torqued bolts to spec (89inch pounds). Reattached electronics and installed new filter. Installed the pan and torqued bolts (120 inch pounds). Topped up with mercon v about 7liters as I shifted gears from park reverse d d1 d2. Topped fluid again and let idle for a bit. Took it for a test drive and still no OD so now I'm thinking it may be a bigger issue for me. Perhaps the band itself is worn or stretched. I also saw that sonnax sells a replacement for the OD valve and sleeve as these wear due to constant oscillation.

I'm open to suggestions at this point but I am thinking of rebuilding.

if you are certain the valve is moving freely, there are 3 possible causes

1) the OD servo pin did not contact the band when re-inserted (most likely cause)

2) the OD servo rubber is damaged from metal debris and not sealing

3) the OD band is burned and/or worn
