I have a VERY STEEP driveway in NC; lately have been hearing a loud clunking sound in 4wd when ascending ; it's as if the drive-train gears are slipping, then catching. I hate to take it to ford dealer...any ideas for a solution?

 

Block the rear wheels. Raise the front and then check ALL the U=joints. On the drive shaft and axles. Wouldn't hurt to check the rear also. Not likely you are having a problem with the gears unless you rallied it hard recently.

THE PUNCH LINE...went to dealer, they replaced IWE rt. front and 4x4 vacuum control solenoid for $214 parts & $280 labor. It works now!
