1992 F150 E40D Tranny Problem

Transmission goes into gear (3rd) sluggish and the rear drive's wheel locks up as if the emergency brakes are applied. Very hard to pull off and engines dies if accelerated hard while engine is cold, gets a little better when warm. The O/D switch (light on gear selector) is not illuminating. Pulls off better in 2nd gear but does not shift. When manually shifted from 2nd to 3rd gears it is a hard shift. The tranny is used from pick n pull junk yard but the removed tranny did the same thing. Are there external sensors or switches that could be causing these issues. Check engine light is not on but this is a OBD-I system. I was told that there is some type of module at the end of the steering column that is wire to the gear selector that may cause similar problems.

You need to run self test and see if any codes are stored.

I tried to retrieve codes with my craftsman scanner but system would not power up the scanner. Tried scanner on another vehicle and it worked well. Possible bad computer causing all of these problems?????

would a bad computer cause "Check Engine" light not to illuminate showing that there is a problem and could the in ability for code retrieval be computer related also?

It could be the computer, but that isn't likely. The OBD connector is powered by the same fuse that powers the lighter socket. If the fuse is bad you won't be able to connect.

replaced computer and still not pulling off and shifting properly in 3rd gear. what else controls the tranny shifting and hard to pull off? There is no "check engine" light on.
