newbie witha trans problem

hello everyone. i just bought a 98 f150 v6 auto. real clean truck for what i paid for it(500 bucks!), problem is you have to put into low when you leave a dead stop and shift it manually. once moving it functions correctly, kicks down when passing on highway, OD works everything hunky dorry. was told something about a modulator, suppossed to be inside trans but all the parts i look up and what i've read say modulator is on outside of trans. any input would be greatly appreciated.

There's no modulator on that transmission, it's all electronically controlled.

Either rebuild the trans or keep driving the way you are. There is no simple fix for this.
