I feel a grinding when shifting into 2nd gear

Hey everyone,

Recently I had to have my slave cylinder replaced in the tranny, and I have been noticing that when shifting from first to second, I feel grinding and it's sometimes harder to physically move the shifter into 2nd gear. The grinding is felt in the shifter itself.

It's only when going from first to second gear on my 5spd.

My truck is a 98 F150 4.6L 5spd and recently had the clutch redone and the slave cylinder replaced.

Fluid level in tranny? Syncros worn out? Shift gates, forks worn out or pins bent?

Do any of these not require the transmission to be dropped by a mechanic to fix / look at?

You can check the fluid level via the fill plug. The other two require transmission removal.

If there is air in the hydro line in will not engage all the way. Re-bleed the line.

I'm not sure it would be a fluid level or air in the lines since it only occurs when going into 2nd gear.

If the tranny has to be pulled this will be the third time in under a year

The M5OD is a bit marginal behind a 4.6, especially if you beat on it. It was designed for lighter and less powerful vehicles.

Oh, this is discouraging to hear these answers. I've recently begun having the same issue on my '97 F150 XL Supercab with a 4.2 V6 and 5-speed manual. When the engine and trans are cool, it shifts like new- but once it warms up, it starts to grind going into 2nd (and only 2nd- all other gears are fine). I've found that if I go a little faster in 1st than usual, then let the revs go to idle before shifting into 2nd, that I can shift without the grind. Trans fluid level is normal. For anyone who knows transmissions, does that help pin the diagnosis down any closer? Thanks for any help!
