Going down the road this evening, went to pass someone, engine just revved. Was in O/D at the time. Took the truck out of O/D no problems.

Tranny appears to shift, 1 to 2, 2 to "nothing" while in O/D.

Anyone else have this occur?

 

normal transmission failure. Time for a rebuild.

Exactly what it was. 4th just left the building according to the mechanic. Rebuild is on its way. Should have it back in a couple of days. Don't drive it much but the garage looks way empty without it.

 

if you don't mind me asking, how much did it actually cost you? my 04 just did the same exact thing... i get the verdict tomorrow.

 

My tranny just went in my 04 5.4 too. 108,000 miles. Turns out this is quite common once u get around 100k miles on these things....
Was told ~$2300 for rebuild, but if the tranny is in bad enough shape I may need to get a remanufactured tranny for ~$3000 total parts and labor....Im screwed

 

Its normal for a transmission that has never been MAINTAINED to fail at around 100k. Change the oil change the filter every 2 years. They last twice as long... They should be able to rebuild just about ANY transmission. If they hit you up for 3 grand find another shop. Transmissions RARELY break that bad especially ones with only 100k on them. A transmission guy who has half a brain should be able to give it a simple rebuild easy.

 

I METICULOUSLY "MAINTAIN" my truck, and my transmission is no exception. I'm downright **** about it. So maintenance was not the issue here I assure you. I used to think the same thing as you when I would hear stories of people complaining about their transmission going out in their 04-08 models.

It was the Ford dealership that was giving me the pricing and info. He said that it depends on how bad the damage is to the internals and that a rebuild only gets you warranty'd parts (and not a very long warranty if I remember correctly) And a new/remanufactured tranny would get me a 3 year unlimited mile warranty on the transmission. So do I go for cheap, or go for peace of mind? I have heard a lot of stories of people getting their tranny rebuilt only to have it start slipping and going out shortly after that.

 

Re-manufactured transmissions are just transmissions that have had a basic rebuild kit installed and whatever failed on them fixed. Same as what fixing the tranny you have will get you. You would be paying for the extended warranty..

What is the cost of an upgraded Transmission ? Or " Built " as some like to say .

 

My 04 has 95,000 on it. I've always taken care of my truck's maintanance. And for what it's worth, I've never towed anything, much less hauled anything ridiculously heavy that would stress the trans out. My mechanic said it's just fairly common with these trans

Mine cost $2365 to rebuild it.. said it would be nearly $3000 for a reman trans.

And to think, about a week before this happened I was going to go see about trading it in for a 2010 leftover. oh well.

 

Mine lost OD at at 78k. Ended up going with a re-manufactured unit from Ford for approx 3,200 out the door. Never had towed or really hauled anything it before it happened. They are just crap

 

Yep I went with a reman transmission. What sold me on that was the 3 year unlimited mile warranty I will get with it. I can put upwards of 20,000 miles a year on my truck so with the reman tranny I should be able to have 60,000+ miles worth of peace of mind when it comes to my transmission.
