Transmission leak... please help

So this morning I woke up to take a look at all my fluids and noticed it was a little low in transmission fluid. So I went ahead and got under the truck and sure enough I find a leak coming from a plastic seal and and to my surprise I able to completely remove it. I am not the smartest car guy but I'm pretty sure this is not good. I had the transmission over hauled a little over a year ago at a dealership, still under warranty at the time but now its no longer under warranty and I am little scared on how much this might cost. Can somebody please help? I am posting some pix i took and here are more details. I bought my truck, a '05 F150 FX4 3 years ago used with about 40k and i currently have 73K miles and regularly have my oil changed.

That's probably a leaky front tranny seal. That plastic thing is just a dust cover for the bellhousing. If it were motor oil leaking out of there, it would be the rear main engine seal.

that plastic plug is an inspection cover for the bell. leak from in there is most likely a front pump seal.

If it is the front tranny seal or the rear main engine seal the trans will have to be removed to fix it. Your looking at around 30 bucks for the seal (a guess on my part) and a few hours in labour at $100 bucks + an hour. I don't know how many hours they charge on the F-150 but it takes longer on a 4x4. Here the rate is $120 per hour.

If the band aid works, then it's better than the hundreds of dollars it takes to do that job. Since the poor fellow didn't know what the leak was, he's obviously not going to fix it himself. Sure, the correct thing to do would be to replace the seal. But then again, I've seen a lot of cars drive on for years with a little bit of a seal leak.

Texas Tom - What did you find was causing your oil leak? Was it the rear main or the transmission? Mine looks exactly like the pictures you listed.

I started with a small transmission fluid leak at this same spot. It quickly turned to a very bad leak.

Pulled the tranny out and replaced the front pump and rear seal. After putting the tranny back in, it still leaked.

Only after taking the tranny back out and replacing the seals again, a new torque converter, and pump-itself gaskets, did the leak stop.

I cannot say with certainty that is was seal, gasket or converter as I replaced them all.

Noggin7717 - Did you do the work yourself? How much did you end up investing to fix your leak?

I always tell people that replacing the seal without replacing the torque converter as well will probably result in the same thing happening again. The seal failed for a reason.

About that front pump seal (F2VY-7A248-A) I changed it and noticed it slid right in way to easy no force required.. beat it some but sure enough it didnt hold all fluid came right back out... why was the oem seal loose? different fluid pump? wtf? need to get a digital mic on the pump n check the seal
