Synthetic Transmission Fluid

Hi All: I recently installed an 04 F150 4R70W transmission in my 97 F150.
I would like to know what you guys think about the use of a synthetic transmission fluid such as, Royal Purple MAX ATF. Thanks for your feed back.

I used Amsoil full synthetic on a recent transmission rebuild for a supercharged Marauder. Great fluid, but its expensive. Amsoil claims to be Mercon V compatible on the label.

Unless you are towing a lot, drag race your truck or live where there are the extreme temperatures (hot or cold), I would think normal Mercon V should work perfectly fine.

Either way, I would install secondary transmission cooler and change the fluid on a regular basis.

jbrew swears by the Amsoil trans fluid. By the way, what happened to jbrew? I haven't read any of his posts in a while.

I'm prone to Valvoline for the past 30+ years....and use their Maxi-life which is full syn, merc V compatible. never had a tranny failure either.

Thank you Guys: Yes I will be towing a car & trailer from time to time. I did remove the little transmission cooler and replaced it with a little larger one with a 10" fan. I also installed a Mag hytech DD deep dish pan. I have 4qt of the Royal Purple. If I buy the Amsoil would it be ok to mix the two? Thanks again.

No, I would not mix fluid. You need to do a complete exchange - 14 quarts or more.

agreed. mixing fluid is not a good idea.

like I said above, Mercon V should work fine for what you want to do.
