Question My overdrive seems confused.

I have a 2000 F150 pushing 135k. It shutters and seems reluctant to jump into overdrive at about 55-65 mph around 2000 rpm. This is very consistant and predictable, it happens literally everytime especially on an incline. It feels alot like a misfire but doesn't trip any codes. When I disable my overdrive, this symptom goes away. Does anyone have any suggestions or solutions to my confused overdrive problem?

Most likely a low grade misfire, but when was the last time you had the tranny fluid changed? Do you have a 4.2, 4.6, or 5.4?

I've never changed the tranny fluid but have only owned it for 2 years. It's a 5.4 I am changing the spark plugs this weekend hoping that will help but it's usually more complicated than that with my luck.

You may need one or more cops. Use Motorcraft plugs, no antiseize, torque to 28 ft/lb, and if you need cops, get a full set on Ebay - search for DG508 and buy them from Global or Uneek. I'd also change the tranny fluid - drop the pan and drain the torque converter too.

if it's chattering into od, you're torque converter is on it's way out. put a new one in and wait till the tranny goes then rebuild or rebuild now. mine was doing the same thing, od off it wouldn't chatter. od on, 4rth and 5th would chatter. and i am moving from california to ohio so i had the hole thing rebuilt

Thanks for the input. I think I'll start small with the plugs coils and fluid before i go spending too much money. Another thing, if anyone knows what is making my odometer dim and dissapear intermittantly. It isn't affecting anything else but it is annoying.

Where'd you get a 5-speed auto trans?

not to jack the forum but my truck is doing this after i got my tune which consisted of plugs, boots, fuel filter.

so would this be my tranny or the engine?
also when i do give it wot the shifts seem firm and responsive until i get to overdrive then it hesitates

You may have one or more weak coils. Did you use Motorcraft plugs and grease the boots with dielectric grease?

if you watch you're tach and count how many times you're tranny shifts. mine shifts 5 times. start out in Drive. which is first... 2 3 4 5 6. (5 shifts points)

od and lock up, i have no idea when these are applyed 5 and 6?

when i was 16 i'm now 45. i took out my tranny in my 76 maverick and tore it apart. rebuilt it and put a shift kit in it. that was easy. 2 3 (2 SHIFT POINTS) i looked at a tranny manual for our trucks and said OH HELL NO. had a shop rebuild mine.

so, 4 speed od and lock up?

going to go drive my truck and see how many times it shifts

You have 4 speeds, but you also have lockup. It's prolly going 1-2-3-3 lockup-4-4 lockup.
