Well, I JUST bought the truck. The trans seems to shift fine into all gears, but has the O/D light flashing at me. Is there any way to pull codes myself, or do I need to go to a dealer? I hate dealers.
Anyway, if it needs replaced what can I use? My local C/L has several of them right now. One from a Mustang, and one that does not specify. BTW, the truck is a 98 4x2 4.6 auto.
BTW, I did feel a slight torque converter shudder every now and then... I also had it slip pretty hard once on the 3-4 upshift where it went into the 6k rpm range. But like I said, during normal driving it's acting 100% normal - except for the flashing o/d light of course.
this is no longer like OBD 1 based vehicles, you cant jump a pin and flash a code. you will need a flash device to pull the codes, so either ford, autozone, or a personal flash tuner will do the trick. find the code and let us know, more knowledgeable people than me frequent this area and should be along to help you more
like i told another fellow last night, the 98 is part of an "plug and play" of the 97-98's. the 99+ needs a pin out modification which is pretty easy to do. i need to find out the pinout modifications and put them on a list of my own to help others.
Autozone's scanners don't read Ford transmission codes. You need to go to the dealer, a transmission shop, or a garage that has the advanced scanner. I think the cheapest scanner that can do it is well over $200.

If it's shifting okay, I doubt that you would need to replace the transmission or do an in-depth rebuild. Do what you have to do to pull the codes first.

I guess so... They just told me flat $120. Miami, bunch of money-grubbing bastards and pretentious hookers. I'll look for local trans shops that can pull the codes and let ya'll know what comes back.
