New trans or rebuild
Hello to all,
I puchased a 05f150 5.4l with 41k. It has a 6'' lift with 35's. It drove great for the first month or two then I noticed a studder...
Ive been surfing this site for answers to my transmission studder when on the highway in overdrive. Then yesterday I lost all power and thankfully right up the street from a trans shop that accepted my aftermarket warranty. After telling me the planetary gear blew out and sent metal everywhere in the trans i got these choices. They gave me a choice of a rebuild(1yr warranty) for the cost of the deductable or cough up another 300.00 for a remanufactured trans(3yr warranty) which he said was like brand new. I chose the reman...did i make the right choice and will this clear up the studder? I love this truck and look forward to keeping for a while, any input is greatly appreciated..Thanks

If you plan on keeping it for a while, you made the right choice. Now, go get some 4.10 or 4.56 gears to lighten the load on the transmission with those big tires.

Is that a Ford reman with a 3 year/100k mile warranty?

Hey..thanks..that makes perfect sense..what kind of cost are we talking for the gears? I have looked into them a little..would you say gears first before a programmer?
As for the warranty..I know its a three year but I will look into the mileage.

Figure $700 to $800 per axle for gears and professional installation. You will also need some kind of programmer to correct the speedo and odo for the large tires and the different gears.

Do they think it was the tires that screwed up the trans even with the 5.4?

Got the truck back today and the tranny feels great. It has a 3yr/36k mile warranty. The guy at the shop said the bigger tires could have something to do with it but he felt it was just luck of the draw. Since I'm the second owner there is no telling what the previous owner did to it. Im due to return the truck to the shop in two weeks for a follow up inspection. So what do you think next programmer or gears?...

Programmer first, because you need to correct the speedo/odo anyway.
