upgrade tranny cooler to super duty?

I have just recently bought a large camper and am going to be upgrading the tranny cooler! Has anyone ever installed a super duty cooler into 04 f150(new style)? Or would I be better off to look at aftermarket? opinions would be appreciated!! thanks RYAN

The Troyer cooler is excellent.

I'd also recommend Amsoil fluid.

i have a troyer transmission cooler that I ended up not needing as I changed to a SD truck. It's brand new with all accessories still sealed in the package. $175 and it's yours if you decide to go the troyer route. Email me at zac.wegg@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Have you checked your tranny temps or anything yet?? The '04 and up truck with the tow package have a very very efficient size cooler on them already. Your efforts may not be necessary. Your tranny is also only going to run but so cool because it has a thermostat controllng fluid flow to the coole to prevent overcooling.

First thing I would recommend is a good temp gauge and pull that trailer a couple times and learn how your tranny will act and see what the temps want to run at. Then decide if you need to upgrade.

And switching to Amsoil will be beneficial also.

Here's the Patman write-up:

Adding an Aux cooler [Write up]

I also was going to upgrade my trans. cooler, but after installing a temp gauge first, I realized it wasn't necessary. Temp only gets to 190 while sitting in traffic during the summer, 130 while normal driving.

You really only need a 'larger' cooler if your tranny temps exceed 225* for sustained periods IMO... This means you are going down a flat hwy and just 'cruising' while towing.

If your temps 'spike' during periods of different driving conditions, then that's normal and if you get to temps of 225*, but it falls back down when you get back to your cruise mode, then your existing cooler is doing it's job...

I got a trans temp gauge that is taking the temp on the trans OUTPUT line, so it's the max temp the fluid is getting BEFORE it gets to a cooler and the most it's gotten to is 210*.... And that was a 90*+ day going up a 6% grade in 2nd gear.. When I got to the top and going down the back side, the temp went back down to around 180*.

The stock coolers on the late model F150's are HUGE, compared to the earlier models, so I'd say get your current trans temps first and then decide what you need to do...

But, if you wish to upgrade for the sake of upgrading... Well, that's your choice..

Mitch
I towed w/ my Gryphon for the first time a month ago & it was as you described, on the steep grades it peeked at 225, but it cooled down a bit on the down grades & flats.

I'll start with changing the Tranny fluid to a synthetic like Amsoil or RP first & if I see no real difference maybe I'll go with the T Cooler.

Thanks Mitch Lee

So if 04+ has a thermostat to control over cooling, what about just installing an electric fan behind it that runs full duty?

I think this was already asked, so sorry!

Computer case fans are not designed to run exposed to the elements.
