Would it still neutral out with OD off? Did you try manual 1st and 2nd gear and see if they engaged?

The reason I ask is because there are two bands in the 4R70W. The reverse band is used in both reverse and manual 1st gear, but not 1st gear in drive. And the Overdrive band is used in manual 2nd gear, and for OD in drive.

So if those two work then its not a band.

Next question would be was it shifting really late from 1st to 2nd? Because you might have the same failure I had and maybe 2nd isn't second at all... I thought I still had 1, 2, and 3rd. In reality the tranny was shifting directly from 1st to 3rd, which is why the shift was so late.

So it would shift 1 then hold it extremely long and then jump into 3rd and i could cruise. This was only with OD off though. If I left OD on it would try to go into OD and neutral out. I also lost reverse at the same time, so if what I just said sounds familiar then at least I already know whats wrong lol.

You really shouldn't have taken out the tranny before asking questions for help because there's no way to test theories now lol.

Yep, that's exactly what I was thinking. The same happened to me and that's why I'm currently rebuilding my tranny lol. That's why I described the symptoms to him. Great guess jhunt47

Yeah, I had this happen to me about a month ago. I'm still rebuilding the tranny slowly. Interesting to see this happen to someone else, it must be a more common failure point than I thought.

I have a couple of shells sitting around that spin free of the gear like that. It isn't uncommon.

Well chalk up another one. Last Friday left work, shifted in reverse mine popped and was sluggish backing up. Shifted to drive and was slow taking off. Next morning same thing happened when I left home. Drove about 2 miles and had no reverse or OD. In the tranny shop now my mechanic says broke planatary gear and it's not even been on the lift yet! 2001 F150 Screw KR 4 x 4
