well a month ago or so i was having some problems with my tranny i believe.....it wouldnt engage into gear unless i revved it up really high.....wen it was really bad i revved it up quite a bit and the driveshaft snapped....i put the driveshaft in today and i need to know wat the problem is...i have an 00 f150 triton v8 4.6 4x4.....it will go into reverse but will not engage into drive or 1 and 2...thanks
If it's full of fluid and slipping that bad it's probably toast. Time for a rebuild.

yes its full of fluid......that really sucks ive only had this truck on the road for like 3 weeks total.....my stang got totaled cuz some pregnant lady macked into me wen i was at a dead stop doing 35.....ive had nothing but problems with cars lately lol....how much for a rebuild usually....the kits are around 300 if im correct right?
I have had a similar problem on my 2004 F150 fx4 w/ 5.4 liter. I have had a problem with the engine revving up and then popping into gear. It was really bad today on my way home from work and today my engine light came back. A couple weeks ago I had the dealership do the following work:
- Replaced two cylinder coils
- Replaced cylinder head sensor
- Replaced all spark plugs and wires
- Replaced fuel filter
I spent a ton on all of this but I'm just about ready to throw in the towel on this truck. Any suggestions on what the slipping could be? When it did it in the past I replaced the fluid and it seemed to help quite a bit. I just checked the transmission fluid with the engine hot and it looked like I was more than full and the fluid looked fairly red too. I would appreciate any help.
For whatever reason it sounds like the forward clutch isn't engaging until it gets a lot of pressure. It could be a valve body issue, a pump issue or an issue in the forward clutch. Perhaps a sticking check ball on the forward drum, but that seems a little far fetched.
The only things you can address without taking the whole transmission out of the truck are fluid level and the valve body. Other than that it's probably time to pull the transmission.
Thanks. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I took it into Autozone this morning and had the codes read for the check engine light.
This is what it gave me:
Code: P0420
Catalyst efficeincy low-bank 1
Explanation
The oxygen sensors monitor the catalytic converters ability to store oxygen.
Probable cause
1. Catalyltic Converter defective (failure possibly due to #2,3, or 4)
2. Engine misfire or running condition
3. Large vacuum leak
4. Engine oil leakage into exhaust-valve guide seals, piston rings
When I left Autozone on my way to work my dash said "TRANS FAULT" and the o/d off symbol was blinking. This was the first time it did that. I started my truck and drove it around the block but it hasn't come back on. My tansmission levels seem alright and the color is red but not bright red and it looks dirty to me.
Thanks,
Daniel
I can get it to go into gear more easily by manually shifting from 1,2 then putting it in drive.
Just got back from aamco transmission and they said around $2000.00 to rebuild it. Called the dealership and they are saying anywhere from $1500 to rebuild and could go up from there up to $3500.00 for a new tranny. Does this sound right?
Another thing. Could the check engine light issue listed above be due to the transmission causing the engine to rev really high? Man I hope it's not another separate issue.

Autozone's code box cannot read the majority of transmission codes. As for the rebuild every Aamco rebuild I have seen had the cheapest garbage frictions made in them. The OEM frictions are far superior. I wouldn't trust the aamco rebuild to last 2 years. If the dealer does it right you should expect 5-7 years of reliable service from it. I suggest talking to a few small transmission shops. They usually care more and use better parts from what I have seen. Aamco gets paid from the home office for warranty work, so it doesn't bother them. Small shops pay out of pocket so they find it cheaper to do it right the first time.

I second the small shop or dealership route. But don't just pick someone out of the phone book. Get references.
Another option, if you want to/can R&R it yourself, is to talk to a couple guys on here who rebuild. Some shops will build you one, then take your core on trade, others, you ship them yours, and they build it and ship it back.
