I have a 97 150 4.2 litre 4x? WITH 4R70w how do i tell if its a 4x4 or4x2.second i have no od and no third od off light flashes iheard this yr had defect was told change either solenoid or shift controller code says possible speed sensor low voltage or shift position sensor where are these parts and how are they tested so for shops keep wanting to rebuild. this one has 88000 miles my other ford has nearly 300000 miles and it works fine whats the guage please help need information to make proper choice dont believe it needs rebuilt thanks
If you have a transfer case, front driveshaft, and front axle you have a 4x4.
If the OD light is flashing, you need to get the tranny codes read by a shop that has a code scanner capable of reading out Ford transmission codes. Without those codes, any troubleshooting will be strictly guessing and speculation.

heard someone ask me if its a 4x4 or 4x2 thanks thought it may have had something to do with the type of differential past that obvious hurdle ill go to a shop again and get an exact code will get back to you as soon as i do. thanks again.
maybe thats why its hard to find a replacement used tranny so far ive learned that the trannys from a 4.6 will bolt up but the starters dont align also the output shaft on a 2 wheel drive and a 4x4 are different lenghts also the geer ratios are different on the v-6 but i not sure if thats in the differentials or in the transmission itself. so iam at the point of looking for a reputable shop to get the codes then maybe doing it myself met a guy in austen that swapped out the valve body from a mustang he says it shifts better than ever but before i can try and trick-it ive gotta get it working properly first i was told that that year there was a defect in the wiring from the factory that caused the exact problems im now having but first i am going to get the codes and go from there just moved to Dallas 5 days ago so need to learn whats going on here first then the next step find an honest shop any sugestions.thanks for any and all knowledge that i can get so i can make a proper descision.
My 4.2 4X4 w/ auto is a fine running truck. Keeping in mind that I don't tow or haul much, I've never had any problem keeping up w/ traffic or felt that the truck was grossly underpowered (unlike my old '85 Ranger V6 4X4).
My only complaint about the 4.2/4X4/auto combo is the crappy mileage (in city driving, several MPG less than my 5.4 7700 work truck). I also get less than 10 MPG putting around on dirt roads in 4wd, which can really limit your range in remote areas.

I can see that. They did have a higher stall converter and it is hard to compare a 4cyl to the 4.2. The 4.2's realistically don't run bad. I towed a ranger all the way to minneapolis and back on a 2wd 4.2 and it did a fine job. Gas mileage was poor however.

I agree that they work, but I just really don't see the point. The ones I have messed with get around the same economy as my 5.4 does and are much less fun to drive and a whole lot less capable.
Not trying to slam the truck, but I just don't get it. It's the same with the 4 liter Explorers. Half the power for the same fuel economy as the V8... Why?

I make pretty good money (or did until my recent 20% pay cut), but I live in California and support a lot of people so I've got to watch every dollar. I do all my own car repairs (in over 30 years of owning cars I've never taken one to a shop for repair) so when I buy a vehicle I'm looking at cost, reliability, ease of repair etc, while still getting a vehicle that meets my wants/needs. The 4.2 meets these requirements in a F150.
I certainly agree that the 5.4 trucks are more fun and more capable. If money were no object I would drive the maxed-out truck, but at this point in my life, I would rather drive a V6 F150 than no F150 at all.
