Question Transmission Trouble

I now have 68000+- on my 2002 F150. The OD light started flashing so I took it to the dealer and they read the code P1517. They told me the transmission needed replacing. This doesn't seem right to me and I am looking for some advice. I don't think the dealer has anyone that knows transmissions and they don't want to admit it. Any ideas on this or any past experience with this problem?

Check that code again - P1517 is IMRC Input Error (Bank 2), which is a V-6 engine code.

Is your transmission working properly?

Thanks for the replay, I got the numbers backwards the code is P1715. My transmission works correctly some, the problem is that sometimes when I start off it will hesitate then drop into gear hard. Sometimes it shifts hard but mostly when I start off.

Shift Solenoid B Inductive Signature

That doesn't sound like a replacement to me. I think your hunch is correct. Find another dealer or a good tranny shop.

I know VERY little about transmission internals, but trying to think logically, it sounds like it probably just needs to have a solenoid replaced? I don't see why that would require replacing the tranny. I'm guessing that it may even be able to be repaired without removing the tranny from the vehicle. Darrin Burch or Dirtyd0g should know more specifics, they are transmission (re)builders with their own shops.

That does sound like a bad solenoid. I would drop the pan for an inspection and ohm test the solenoid first. The ohm test may or may not give you a definate answer. I hate to say replace the solenoid as that may or may not be the problem but it is somewhere to start. I have run into several occasions where the wires were melted on the egr or the connections were just corroded. If you ohm test it from the PCM you should see your problem.

Thanks, I had a honest mechanic look at it and got it repaired for under $600. It was the shift solenoid.
