4R70W Transmission: Can the Filter fall off?

Greetings,

I changed the transmission filter for my 2001 F150 with a 4R70W transmission and whereas the original filter in the tranny was snug against the valve body, the replacement filter I bought from Autozone seemed to sag a bit after plugging it into the valve body. I'm concerned that the sagging might indicate a not-so-tight fit and I'm worried if the filter could actually fall off the valve body.

Anyone ever hear of the filter falling off the valve body? I'm thinking perhaps the clearances in the pan are such that the filter doesn't have the room to fall downwards off the valve body but I thought I would ask.

It pretty much sits on the pan...so it can't really fall off as such....i just changed mine today.

You may not have pushed it in far enough.

The only transmission that I personally know of where the filter fell off is my friend's 77 Olds Cutlass back in the 70's. He bought the car new and I think it was the original filter. His transmission started slipping when the filter came off. The dealer replaced the filter and the trans worked fine.

It could just be that your aftermarket part from Autozone does not fit as well as an OEM part. Next time, try to get your hands on Motorcraft.

Did you remove the old filter o-ring from inside the valve body? Sometimes upon removing the filter the o-ring stays behind.

If I were you, I would drop the pan again and make sure the filter is installed properly.
