Yes I have accomplished the search and read what is written on the site... BUT, i want to tell my story and see what yall think.
So a little background on my truck... 2007, 5.4, VMP tuner (87 Perf tune), 33" nitto terra grapplers, and a leveling kit.
So... I was driving into work this morning, going about 49-50 MPH, the truck is in OD as usual. All of the sudden it pops out of OD for like 2 seconds. I didnt even think twice about it as it went right back into OD. Then i get thru the gate at work, and the OD light starts to blink, and the message center reads "TRANS FAULT". After about 10 seconds, it stops blinking and everything is GTG.
At lunch today, being the worrisome person that i am, i decided to go out and "fix" the tune on it. I had the shift pressures up 10% from what VMP had it at. So i put the truck back to stock, then put the tune back on it with the shift pressures back the way they were originally.
So I am driving home and am slowing down to stop for a red light... I was going about 10 MPH and the OD light starts blinking again and the "TRANS FAULT" comes on. I stop for the light and after about 10 seconds, the lights turn off and everything is normal...
SOOOO... I am woried. I only have 22k miles on the truck. What should I do? take it to the dealership? If so, should i put the truck back to stock? are they going to know that it was tuned? will they fix it with the bigger tires and what not?
Any and ALL answers will be greatly appreciated. I dont need my truck to die on me when I'm going down the road... HELP ME PLEASE!
With the flashing OD light there is now a stored transmission code that needs to be read to have any idea of what the computer didn't like. Without that this is all a guessing game.
The only indication that the dealership can have that the truck was flashed is that it will give them a P1000 code telling them that it hasn't been driven long enough since you reset it back to stock. Other than that there is really no way.
Not sure what they will do about the tires and a lot of that depends on if they can be related to the stored code. Some places are worse than others about stuff like that for sure though.
Sorry to not have any real answers, but anyone who says they know at this point is either psychic, psycho or just not real good with the truth.
go back to stock and remove tuner, from what i know the dealer ship wont know... not to mention that it might have voided the warrenty so bring it down there and not say a word...
On a side note, a truck came in the shop with the od light flashing today... the three wires coming from the column shifter for the OD switch run through a wire loom, the wire loom one of the wire open wore down the insulatin and was grounding causing the light to blink... i dont know if this well help you any... but thought i would say
Oh, on the P1000 code, you can either drive it several times over a couple of days and/or try and explain that you took it to get the codes read at someplace like Autozone and they couldn't find anything but said something about "resetting" the computer "or something"
Acting puzzled by what the guys at Auotzone meant helps.
ok, so i can play the dumb guy. i just hope they dont give me crap for having bigger tires on the truck, thats the only thing they can throw at me for the whole power train warranty.
alright, so, i went to the dealership here in anchorage. The transmission guy only works on Mon-Fri. so i am dropping my truck off tomorrow night, and he is supposed to look at it monday. My question now is, if it is a warranty covered problem, when will i know? I dont have another vehicle, and i'm not married. Relying on other people to get to work is a PITA. And I must have a loaner vehicle. Does the power train warranty cover a loaner vehicle?
I had the same problem in my 2000 Scab. The wiring from the OD switch in the trans selector was pinched causing a fault. They replaced the wiring and I never had an issue since.
im not sure about the states, but i know that i have personally seen warrenty get denied for trans issues because of the bigger that stock tires.
it mostely depends on how the customer presents himself to the dealership, (raging a-hole, or honest and pleasant)
as for you tuneing to pcm. it depends alot on the manufacture of the chip as to how they leave a trace of themselves in the pcm or not. the older hard chips alot of the time show up as a "different vehicle", such as a f150 showing up as a ranger etc. the newer programmers are harder to find, but they can be traced by shift stratigies, idle data, evap system, etc not being fully completed of their self tests. evap takes the longest after a re-program, up to a week of normal driveing before it fully completes its self test.
if you can get me the codes that the trans has i can give you a good heads up as to what the dealership should be telling you as to what is wrong with the trans.
Well the dealership called me back today and said they have found the problem... some sensor in the tranny pooped out. Cant remember which one he said i shall find out tomorrow when i go pick it up!!!
So, i called up the dealership today to see if i could come and pick up my truck. Guy tells me that when the tech dropped the trans pan to install this new sensor, all he found in the bottom of the pan was.... METAL!!!
I was like OMG!!!
Tech says he hasnt done a whole lot of "exploring" yet but says that it is "bad." also let me know that i am covered under the warranty! woot woot! he mentioned something about the planetary gears among other things and that he will let me know more tomorrow.
So, i am now stuck driving an '09 fushion... let me say for the record, if you are as tall as me (6'4") dont even think about it! I have to open the sunroof and stick my head out to fit in the darn thing! Seriously though, I am SOOOOO glad it is being covered under warranty!
So now that we know a little more about the situation, do you guys think that the tuner had something to do with this? I had the shift pressures up 10% from what Justin had them at for about 2 weeks. Before that i just had it the way he made it, so about 5 months.
I too am curious about your thoughts about how turners affect on the life of trannys. For the most part I think they are good - firmer shifts equal less heat, friction and wear -that's good, and should relate to longer life.
I guess it's like everything else in life - moderation is the key. Somewhere between neck snapping, high pressures, and the sluggish slipping shifts from the factory is where you want to be?
So I went and picked up my truck today!!! WOOOHOOOO!!!!!
Anyways, here is a scan of the transaction sheet:
So there you go... although it really does not make sense to me as to why it was popping out of OD if the problem was with the reverse... any insight guys?
