97 f150 auto trans shifter lever sliding problems

I have a 1997 f150 4.6L v8. I installed a body lift about 2 weeks ago and everything has been fine. I noticed right away that the distance between {P}ark and {R}everse on the column shifter had a shorter gap, but it was manageable and the other gears were ok.
The problem: I was waiting in line at a drive-thu and I shifted it to {N}eutral so I could let off the breaks, and when I shifted it back to {D}rive the shifter on the steering column suddenly was able to slide freely up and down. The indicator corresponds with the shift lever, but it doesn't click or lock into any other gears. As of right now, it is sitting in my drive way stuck in {D}rive.
My question is, what broke, and how can I fix it/ find it? Does anybody know where the locking of the shifter occurs? maybe in the cab, or in the transmission?
Please any help will do, I need to fix this.
Thanks,
~Ryguy1188
