Mileage due for tranny fluid change/flush

Howdy,
Just got done doing the 60,000 mile service on my 02 F150 FX4, which calls for a tranny fluid change. The fluid still looks new and the transmission runs fine. Do I really need to change it out?

Put drop of your used stuff on a clean white rag then put a drop of some new stuff next to it. Does it still look clean? If so you could let it slide until the next service but for the cost of transmission fluid and the cost of rebuilding your trans I like to do mine every 50,000 km's (30,000 miles for you). I only change the filter every other service interval.

I'll betcha your owners manual recomends 30,000 mile transmission service intervals.

The 30k recommendation is for severe service. Normal service is 150k. I personally would get a full fluid exchange every 60k.

The service book says to change the fluid at 60,000 miles. I did a transmission flush at 30,000, so I think I'll just do a fluid change. In the past 30,000 miles I have only towed twice so I don't think the transmission has seen any tough use.

I am going thru the same dilemma. My 07 is at 30K and warranty is almost up. If something were to go wrong the dealer might bring up the fact that a person didn't do their 30K tranny service.

I have no problem spending $$ to care for my truck BUT if it really doesn't need it I DO have a problem with WASTING $$. I do not tow or haul right now so I'm leaning toward not doing it till 60K.

I heard once that if you start changing it at 30K always keep doing it at 30K intervals. If not don't ever do it unless it DOES need it. I am still mixed on this subject. If I towed very much at all...NO question I would do it.

The bottomline is still this. The two BIGGEST enemies of the auto trans is dirt & heat.

The official schedule says every 30k for NORMAL operation for a 2002 5.4 4wd. Interesting. To be safe, do a fluid exchange every 30k.
