Transfer case grinding - HELP!

I have a '06 150 that occasionally will produce a griding noise from the transfer case at any speed. I can also feel it through the floor of the truck. The first time it happend I immediately stopped on the side of the road and just before I came to a stop, the noise stopped. The next time it made the noise, I switched to 4 wheel drive at about 40 mph and the noise stopped, then I switched it back. I brought it to the dealer, and they could not replicate the problem. They said they would have to tear it all apart to try to locate any possible issue. It has continued to do this once a week or so, each time it stops when I switch to 4x4 or stop. The other day it did it 3 times in 10 miles. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this before I pay dearly to have my transfer case tore apart?

Paralyzer: Thanks for the quick reply. I did a quick search on IWE on this site and it sounds like exactly the issue I have. That is why I come to this site...the brain trust helps those of us who are not as well rounded on vehicle repair. Thanks for the info, I will call the shop tomorrow.
