stuck in 2nd

2000 F150 2wd with 89,000 miles. Gets stuck in 2nd gear. When I hit about 45 mph it stops accelerating and the motor just revs up. When I turn the OD off it still won't shift out of 2nd but I can accelerate. I just changed the transmission filter and still have the same issue. Any ideas

Is the OD light flashing at you?

2nd gear is the default gear. Its what you get when no electrical input is applied to the shift solenoids and therefore what is used for 'limp home' mode for the transmission.

Usually this menas the computer saw a serious electrical issue or that something has come unplugged. If the OD light is flashing then there is a stored code that can be read out by a sho with a GOOD scanner. That means you can't go to autozone or the like. You need to find a shop with a quality scanner that can read Ford transmission codes. If someone tried to read the code with an inferior scanner they won't get the code, but they will erase it.

thanks Darrin.

the od light doesn't flash and I am getting no check engine lights or anything. Do the lights need to come on before a scanner can be hooked to it?
