Replacing transmission on '94 f150

Looks like I'm the new owner of a 94 f150 2wd that needs a transmission. It's a 4.9L 6-cyl with tr code "E" so it looks like I'm looking for a E4OD. The interchange list I have says that I can use a transmission from just about any 92-94 f-series truck a with 4.9L, 5.0L, or 5.8L engine or van with a 4.9L or 5.8L. Why wont a 95 or later transmission work? Are there any other vehicles with a transmission that will interchange without modifying the drive shaft, replacing the computer, etc?

I plan to use this for a second work truck so I want to keep the out of pocket costs as low as possible. I've been looking for a used transmission in junk yards. Does anyone have any advice on how to identify the ones that are likely to have the most life left in them? (It's an electronic speedometer model so I wont be able to read the mileage) Any other suggestions about how to find a transmission that will put this truck back on the road without spending $1k -$1.5k for a rebuilt or remanufactured one?

I'll appreciate any knowledge or experience you have to share.
