I have a 2002 F150 4x4 Super Crew, that just recently had shifted into 4 wheel low while driving at about 40 mph. After the engine was turned off,then re-started it was ok. I have not driven it since then except for a drive down our road. The only way that it can be shifted into 4 wheel low is in neutral while the brake is applied. I'm afraid to drive it on the freeway. My dealership has never heard of this happening & was on no help except to bring in in. Any ideas? Could it just be a faulty selector switch? Any help would be appreciated.

 

it should only go into 4lo in neutral... thats normal.

when you shifted it moving at 40 you probably broke something unless the computer stepped in and didn't let anything happen... did you hear a lot of grinding?

 

?? When you put it in 4lo going 40mph, what happened? If you suddenly lurched forward, and the engine went from around 1500 rpms to over 5000 rpms, then you might have a problem...

If all that happened was the **** or lever went into that position, then all that happened was you shifted into 4hi and that was it...

It's correct that the ONLY way to go into 4lo is to be stopped, foot on brake and in neutral. If any ONE of those situations does not exist, then you won't go into 4lo...

When you drive it now, what are your rpms at? Does it drive normally? What happens when you do put it in 4lo (by being stopped, foot on brake and in N). Drive forward and does it feel any different? It should, if it's truly in 4lo.

I think you are fine... The whole process to put your truck in 4lo is setup that way so you CAN'T accidentally shift it to the position while in motion... Soccer moms and all! ha, ha!

Anyway, come back and answer some Q's and we'll tell you what the deal is..

yea you should be fine.........i would take caution next time tho. they say that our trucks can go into 4wd on the fly which i am sure they can. but if i switch it up i am at a dead stop

 

I think he's saying it shifted into 4 lo by itself. Or maybe I misunderstood.

if you accidently jus turned the **** to far i beleive nothing happend i have done it in my 03 and nothing happend at all i just went into 4 hi i think others are right the computer stops it from happeing.

Oh yeah. I'd be cleaning out my shorts for sure. No wonder he's scared to drive it down the freeway.

qweak hopefully someone can help you out but I would definitely have that thing in a shop getting looked at if that is actually what happened.

been a member for a while but never post, just read. However, the only way i can get my 01 f150 SC 4x4 is by putting the truck in "P" and turning the dial to 4lo. I know you can go to 4hi from "N", however, I just do it from "P". I still don't know why they call "On-the-Fly" when in it is not really on the fly.

 

4hi is on the fly.... never heard of 4 lo being on the fly though

 

You can shift into 4hi while moving no problem.. Well, you wouldn't want to do it going 60 mph.... Even with the floor shifted T cases, you can do this.. 4lo is the only thing that won't shift into unless you have the 3 elements in place...

You deffinetly can do it on the fly....

 

I personally have never done it. I always put in N and switch. I guess i'll have to try it.... something about moving and enagaing 4hi turns my stomach....

i don't know. one time i switched into 4 wheel, turned the **** too far while in drive and i got a grinding noise. never had a problem with my 4wd, even used 4lo succesfully plenty after.

im just saying its possible to switch into 4lo without the necessary precautions but it's not good at all.
