Intermittent O/D Problem?

Hi, I have a 1997 F-150 supercab with a 4.6L engine, 4WD and 256K miles.

Since i've had the truck ( about a week) It has had a delay going into first (which after reading around today, I'm suspecting is the fluid and filter needing to be changed)

But the o/d is another story. On a trip to harrisburg, i noticed that while cruising in o/d, It will randomly jump into what seems like neutral for a second, rev up since my foot is on the gas, then return to o/d and be fine. no clunk or thump... its all nice ans smooth.

It doesn't have a preference as to when it does it either (under load, cruising, uphill, downhill, etc.) it will just do it randomly, and go back to o/d... when it locks back into gear, I can resume driving as i was...put my foot on the gas and it will go fine. sometimes, it wont do it at all. No codes, no blinking light, nothing... fine in every other gear...

Could this be my OD going? or do you guys think a fluid and filter change will do the trick for it as well? Or possibly something electrical?

Thanks in advance!

-Rob

At 256k, your tranny may be on its last legs to begin with. If you want to try a fluid change, drain the torque converter too, it has a plug on a 97.

Ok, changed the fluid and filter, and that fixed my delayed shift problem... And so far, around town, the O/D has not acted up... I will take it on the highway a bit later today, and I'll get back with a result

Thanks!

My '97 torque converter is very sensitive to small pedal movements. Takes very little to get it to unlock, and when you get back on the gas, it will rev up and then drop back down as it locks. This is annoying, but normal. Very annoying, I might add.
