Transmission goes in all gears but . . .

doesn't move in reverse. To get the truck to move backwards I've got to remove the drive shaft.
I can physically feel the tranny shift into the gears (going from park to reverse to neutral to drive/not driving).
It moves forward but I can't get the truck to move backwards in any gear including neutral.
I'm guessing internal failure but looking for some help before towing it or replacing the tranny myself.
Thanks

Just a follow up.

Took transmission out this weekend and broke it down to see what was going on.
What I found.
I need to replace the entire planet gear set. planet gear, ring gear, shell, sun gear and bearing.
Bearing failure seems to be the culprit. Gear teeth missing caused the binding I was experiencing.

maxxxmadus, I had the same thing happen with the same trans 2 years ago. My trans shop didn't know what caused it to happen, did yours have any ideas? It would be nice to have a reason for that particular failure, since I have read more than a couple post on here with the same problem, but no cause is ever given.

I would quess its the 4r7ow, seems like there the only one with that particular problem, or atleast from what I've read here. Mine was the '01 4.6 with a 4r70w.

An E4OD from a six cylinder F150 will work as long as it is from a 4x4.

I have a 2003 F150 135K trans serviced every 30k at dealer. On my way home from work I backed into my parking spot, no reverse it was locked up, moved forward ok though it started in 3rd gear, went to reverse again, still locked up. If you removed the driveshaft, it would roll backwards. Had it towed to my shop and removed trans pan, full of metal chunks, not cool. New trans on the way for tues. No signs of trans starting to fail. Just what I needed...

kingme- ask your trans shop if they know the cause. As much as I hear of this same problem with this trans, someone should know something. At this point I would settle for a educated guess if its from a trans mechanic. From one thing I've read on this forum about the 1-2 acumualator spring breaking in the 4r70w, could this cause a mechanical afailure like this? Mine did hang-up in first and than slammed second just before this happened.

I talked with our trans tech at my shop on his thoughts, he said it was either torque converter starting to come apart or a bearing starting to fail. Then a piece of metal or debris went through the planetary which caused the failure. Mine gave me very little warning. The od light did flash a couple of times in the last month with epc solenoid codes but always went away. I was thinking wiring concern at the time. Then after a 20 mile ride home from work I was backing into the driveway and it locked up in reverse. It sucks bigtime you try to maintain the vehicle and try not to beat on it and it does this sh&$. I am bumming mainly because I spent the majority of my savings on an engagement ring so that leaves very little left after the trans replacement which will run apporx $2000.00 through my shop with me doing the labor. Good luck with yours it seems like just a crappy characteristic of this trans!!!
