Tranny slips then slams into gear

I have a 1994 F150, 5.8L engine, auto trans, 4x4, 350,000 miles. - For the past four years, intermittently, the tranny seems to slip into neutral then after a few seconds slams into gear. If this happens I can come to a complete stop, then as I accelerate it revs high between every gear shift and only shifts when I gently lower the rpms. When it finally shifts into gear it slams, like there is no clutching action. It does this in every gear during acceleration. - Now I also get a bad shutter when the tranny automatically downshifts from OD to 3rd gear while going up hill. - I had the tranny flushed, and had the Ford folks look at it. Of course it didn't act up when Ford looked at it so they didn't have a solution other than replacing the tranny. - The tranny is original (350,000 miles) and the torque converter was replaced at 40,000 miles under factory warrantee. Lots of miles on both so I wonder if both should be replaced. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

im guessing its an e4od.....sounds like its just plain tired....especially with mileage like that. the pre 95 pumps are crap anyhow...might as well have it overhauled......the 94 e4od is not the best unit. there were many revisions made 95-up. pump, center support etc.....

if it was just coming out of 4th id say it was the mlp senser but from what you explain youve got other issues.....

when it was flushed did they pull the pan?

Can torque converter cause this?

I read that the torque converter is designed to lock in overdrive. If the converter was to lock in all gears for some reason would it give my symptoms? Could an electrical sensor/switch/etc cause a similar problem? - I just drove it around for 10 miles or so with the overdrive turned off and the tranny shifted fine. I realize that was not a really good test but I am starting to wonder if the converter is bad or a sensor is faulty. Can anyone tell me if there are any electronic components I might change that could affect this?

this is definitely not converter related. the converter locks in gears 2 thru 4.

and a converter will not cause a neutral out problem.....your transmission needs to be torndown. im sure it needs to be gone thru.

on a side note. if youre having the issue happen...and you cancel the o/d button...if it begins to shift normally...the o/d sprag is most likely slipping or worn.... but it doesnt really matter cus this repair requires disassembly.
