Question Few transmission concerns.

Just put a trans in with 90,000 miles and drove it 1500 miles so far. I used to have a 4.6 so i am still using the 4.6 PCM. What i am wondering is if the 4.6 has lower shift points than the 5.4? Because it shifts way to fast. I will come to a stop, and take a right, and before i even straighten out its in 2nd already. Also, when i lay on it in 1st to 2nd, 3rd comes RIGHT after i let off the gas, then 4th right after that.

And with that, the way it shifts automatically, it thumps a little when engaging on every gear but going into 4th is fine. BUT, when i manually shift at a little higher rpm, from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to third there is no thump anymore. Could this all be caused by the 4.6 pcm?
Or maybe when i jammed the torque converter against the flywheel when i dropped the motor in. (torque converter was not in all the way)

It seriously sounds like you need to get a tune to correct all of that. It doesn't sound like mechanical or other issues, just tuning issues.

i honestly dont know what type of trans it was, its identical to my 4.6s 4r70 except on the top of the bell housing the 4.6's said "31" and the 5.4s said "32". Whats that mean?

Those numbers are casting numbers. They just provide manufacturing info on the case itself and don't mean anything to what is inside it at all.

can someone help w/trans. question?

i have a 01 f-150 4x4 5.4 .i put a trans in at 115,000 and drive for the last year ,put on 14000 miles and the trans. has done again what happend the first time the middle ring on the outputshaft snaps and smoked the direct clutch pack..so the mechanic said that there was an option to put a rubber ring in there .the rings brake and let pressure off to the direct clutch .in the book there is a option for this rubber ring along with the steel ring and another steel ring with special coating on it. the overhaul kit comes with the steel ring .has anyone have a helpful thought to help me on this thanks so much brad

A couple of things...

Did they replace the transmission case the last time it was rebuilt?

If so, then I would look at the rest of the drivetrain and see if anything is loose and causing any vibration.

I have a 02 f-150 with a 5.4l engine,my tranny is taking longer to shift from 2nd to 3rd. When it does shift,it is at a higher rpm than normal & sometimes the engine revs up high then shifts into 3rd gear.Ibought the truck used & i have never changed the fluid & filter. It has 112,000 miles $ runs fine at highway speeds. I dont think the previous owner(s) have changed it either. Would a fluid & filter change solve my problems?

no they did not replace the case they put in the rubber rings on the output shaft. got it back tonight seems good to go but cant see that in such a tight space where the output shaft goes in to that the steel rings can snap, and release the pressure to the clutch pack.i had no vibrations , i had 14,ooo on the overhaul and it just had a miss shift from 3 to4 ,like you slipped it into neutral for a brief second then caught , after that i kept a good eye on the shift points ,and returned it back to mechanic before it really smoked up parts.now ihave officially have 2300.00 in trans for the last 14 months
