A few weeks ago I had trouble with my tranny - lost 3rd gear. I swapped it with another one that had 62k miles on it. When I tried it out it slowly shifted into reverse, and the same through all the gears. At one point it wouldn't go anymore. It idled for a couple of minutes then caught first gear, then shifted through all the rest. On the return run it would not shift into reverse. I got back to the house and put the rear end on blocks to adjust the shifter (using the reverse light trick). Still no reverse, and the tranny is very hot. Now the wheels turn in neutral and sometimes in drive also. I also noticed that the check engine light is on and it won't accelerate past about 2100 rpms. did I forget to hook something up, miss something, or did I just get a bad tranny? Any help is greatly appreciated.
The shop I got the tranny from gave me a replacement after I told him what happened. I'm just about done eplacing this one. One of my friends told me that the computer needs to " read " or " recognize " the tranny. Is that true? Because the manual didn't mention anything about this. I'd like to know before I fire the truck up.
My truck is an '02, I'm not sure what year the tranny is, but the only difference is that the speed sensor plug is different. We modified the plug ( cut my old plug and attached the plug from the replacement tranny) and it worked. so far it seems to be working fine. Thanks for your input guys.
