trans won't work in OD

I have an 05 supercrew 4X4 with 17,500 miles. The tranmission started to disenage at 28 mph while in overdrive and won't reengage unless I take the OD off. It works fine then minus no overdrive. I took it to a independant shop and they scanned for codes and found none and said electrically and hydraulicaly with scanner on road test was sound. Should I buy a rebuilt transmission or just fix the problem ? Warranty was expired in July, any chance Ford with help with cost on a goodwill basis ?

In all honesty, this sounds familiar and not good. It almost sounds like the intermediate stub shaft broke.

Are you absolutely positive that you have 3rd gear? Most people think they do even though they don't. Best way to tell is to let us know the rpm you are running at when you are at maybe 40mph.

Oh, let us know what size tires and rear end gear ratio you have as well please.

It's at 1500 rpm,s @ 40 mph, tires are 275/65r18. I took it to a transmission shop today and they thought the OD band was broken.

I sincerely doubt that the OD band is broken. That is the one thing that I have never seen in these transmissions. If the vehicle is neutraling then you need to go find another transmission shop.

Do you have stock rear gearing in the vehicle? Any chance you can get me the computer code from your vehicle?

My rear axle is a 3.73 limited slip which came with the vehicle new. Both shops said there were no computer codes stored. I don't know that it's going into neutral but at aprox. 28 mph the transmission is not engaged and acts as if it were in neutral if you slow down it will reengage until you reach that speed. I'm assuming that it's trying to shift into the next gear, although with OD off it shifts fine at that speed. Are there any fuses that are tied to the electronics that could be the problem and not show up ?

sorry if I wasn't clear. I am wanting the computer catch code so that I can look at your programming to see a few things.

Looking at the numbers it does look like you are in 3rd gear. So that likely makes it not a broken stub shaft.
