I have a 2005 Ford F150 4X4 Supercab 5.4L XLT with 30,000 miles. At Approximately 45 miles per hour the overdrive failed and a flashing O/D Off light illuminated. This was accompanied by a TRANS FAULT message on the message centre.
The transmission shifted out of overdrive and after about 20 seconds overdrive re-engaged. The messages remained. The truck runs fine otherwise and once the ignition is turned off and then turned back on the messages disappear.
I have experience this problem twice over the last 7 days.
Is this a software issue, or is there an actual mechanical problem with transmission?
The fluids been changed. It is an intermittent fault and only happens infrequently. Has anyone had this particular fault and if so, what was the cause?
I had that problem with my '04 at about 10k miles. I took it to the dealership several times and they gave me about a dozen reasons why they "thought" it was doing this. It ended up leaving me stranded on I-10 at about 20k. The tranny gave out and they replaced the whole thing. It still doesn't feel right, but I have an extended warranty so I'm not really worried.
My truck did this about a week ago. It had acted sluggish most of the morning then started flashing the OD light and "trans Fault" came up on the message center. I only had 2,700 miles on my truck.
I talked to the dealership and they said that it was probably just a computer glitch. They told me if it didn't happen again I was OK. I'm not so sure about that since it acted like the transmission was slipping prior to this occurrence. It hasn't happened since so I'm hoping they are right.
According to my shop, they said the tranny overheated and needed service. Logically this makes sense since it only happen on the way UP the mountain (Snowshoe, WV) and down, last mountain about 20 miles west of Staunton. There was no 4WD used at all climbing the mountain; while on top yes, but not on the way up.
I did however notice a whining, or vacuum like sound, but have not identified the issue as of yet. I'll report back since this site seems the only one to have hits regarding the trans fault error.
Since my post, no issues at all. I took it to the shop for a flush, filter change to be safe.

Still have the issue. It ONLY happens driving through the mountains. According to the shop, it over heats.
This has happened to me 3 times now on my 2005 F150 over 18 months. Third time was this morning. Very cold (8 F). Trans Fault came on along with the "O/D Off" indicator light turning on. Lasted about 15 seconds and went away. My extended protection expires in 2 months. Would like to get this figured out while I still have coverage. Anybody have issues like this in cold conditions?
I've done that in addition to adding a transmission cooler. Turns out, the internal thermostat was stuck and had to be replaced. An under $500.00 fix. Your best bet with it is to take it to the dealer near you, or a dealer you trust and have them run the diagnostic on it. They charged me $80.00 for the initial diag, but because the issue was deeper , they had to run a more specific diag for another $80.00.
In short, they found out it was the thermostat. That, with the labor, diagnostics, two bulbs and a state inspection ran me $400.00.
Since then, lots of trips to the mountains and hauling cargo or towing, no issues at all. Better to spend a couple of hundred bucks than quite a few thousand.
Problem solved.
I still here some "whistling" on cold mornings, but not as much or as strong. So that tells me there is an "nag" problem somewhere, but does not effect the truck at all.
Mine's at the dealer for just this issue..... od light flashing...trans error in display... mine was caused by mudding, burnt the damn thing down... tried to hard to get out~...damn stubborn!... help came.. got them stuck.... luckly the neighbor had a tractor... so after all that fun i'm 3k int he hole with a new transmission.
