1997 F150 4x4 engage

Problem :
When I turn the button to engane 4x4 high in my truck it clicks , clicks , clicks... in the dash, the **Bang** I hear a loud bank in th front differencial when it engages, fine , I am on 4x4 now.
Why does it bang like that if I am moving ? I am doing like 5 MPH . I thought it was shift on the fly ... Any tips what could be the problem ? I searched here and the manual could not find any clue on what this problem is...
Thanks
97 F150 4x4 4.6 V8 Scab

If the rear wheels are turning faster than the front wheels it will bang. Let up on the throttle when you shift and see if it still bangs.

If the bang is coming from the front axle then obviously the axle is not engaging properly. I would check the easy stuff first. The axle is engaged by a lock collar slipping over splines in the axle. A shift fork pushes the collar over the splines. The shift fork is moved by a vacuum motor. Vacuum is applied to one side of the diaphragm to pull the collar off the splines to disengage. vacuum is applied to the other side to lock the collar over the splines. If the vacuum motor is damaged or there is insufficient vacuum to pull the collar over the splines it could bang. The motor is on the front axle tube on the passenger side of the differential. There are two vacuum lines routed up through the engine compartment to two solenoids on the firewall on the passenger side behind the battery. There should be a shield over the vacuum motor that will be in the way of inspecting the motor. I would use a vacuum pump to verify the action of the motor and to test the integrity of the vacuum lines.

If your rear tires are worn down more than the fronts (or vice versa) the front axle will engage with a bang because the front axle anr rear axles are spinning at different RPM.

Talking 4x4 engage

FIXED
OK Folks,
First of, I want to express my gratitude for those who replied. For those experiencing this issue , here it goes a simple fix that took care of my problem.Try this first before anything else.
I removed the plastic cover from the top of the actuator on top of the front differential, I pulled the little rubber boot aside, the one on the shaft of the actuator with a flat head screw driver, sprayed WD40, moved the lever back and forth by hand.
sprayed the lever , moved it again back and forth few times, put some high temp grease, put the boot back together , wholah works beautifully, no more noise engaging in and out of 4x4 on the move.
