Transmission isn't in the VIN, it's on the door plate like the axle. Only thing you can get out of the VIN is the engine.

Position 1-3 World Manufacturer Identifier
Position 4 Restraint System Type
Brake Type and GVWR Class (Trucks and Vans Only)
Position 5-7 Line, Series, Body Type
Position 8 Engine Type
Position 9 Check Digit
Position 10 Model Year
Position 11 Assembly Plant
Position 12-17 Production Sequence Number

Here's a VIN decoder for ya:

GLC,

I was hoping you might be able to clear something up for me. Iam looking for a used supercrew right now and one of the things I put on my list of things to have was the 4r100. I have spent some time looking and have yet to find one. I was reading on the Transmission Information Page and found that it was only offered untell 01. But later down on the first page some one else chimes in and says they are found all the way up to 03's.

I really dont want to bring up a dead horse but i would like to know which one is right.

Thanks GLC

The only truck the 4R100 was offered in was the Lightning and 7700 series. Its predecessor, the E4OD was offered in early 97-98 5.4's. There are a few very rare exceptions to this rule, as a truck could have been special ordered... The 4R70W can/has been built to handle the power of supercharged engines coupled with huge tires.

If you want a 4R100, buy a used Super Duty crew cab.

it is a good transmission. however, it is not going to handle a built supercharged lightning engine for too long in stock form. if you're engine is producing <350 hp at the crank, you are in safe zone for the stock 4R70W, and should face no maintenance issues asides regular fluid changes. the stock 4R100 is good for around ~500 hp at the crank, hence its use in superduty and lightning applications. like i said, though, the 4R70W can be built for whatever purposes you want. The 4R70W is ~5in shorter, and 150 lbs lighter than the 4R100 as well.
