2000 4R70W intermittent no Drive(3rd) on upshift.

I have a stock 2000 F150 4.2 auto, with 3.55 rear-end. The transmission on an intermittant basis has no Drive (3rd) gear.

It shifts perfect from 1st to 2nd, then when going into drive (third) its just like it has gone straight into neutral. By backing off the throttle and waiting a couple of seconds it then shifts into Overdrive and it works fine. The transmission downshifts into drive (3rd) just fine and has never had the problem on the downshift.

Some days it upshifts perfect into drive without doing this at all.

I have owned the truck since new, and it now has 150,000 miles. I changed the filter and put in Amsoil transmission fluid about 60,000 miles ago.

The fluid is very clean and looks new, with no hint of burning or looking old.

My guess is a valve inside the transmission isn't working correctly and is causing this problem.

Is there anyway I can fix this without rebuilding the transmission? Is there any chance it could be a sensor or computer problem?

Thanks for the help, as right now I can hardly spare a dime let alone spend money on a rebuild.

My truck did the exact same thing and it the only problem my tranny guy found was a broken Accumulator spring. I had 170,000km on it at the time and I had pulled it already, so he did a complete rebuild. Well worth it!

If your mechanically inclined, drop the pan and valve body and check for any broken springs. could be a cheap easy fix.

Good luck!

If it was like mine, then there is no way for it to get to OD it just revs when it trys to go into 3rd, kinda like if you were to throw it in neutral right before it should shift into 3rd. Mine would go back into 2nd when the revs/speed would go back down. I had to Manually do the 1-2 shift and keep it in 2nd so it wouldn't try and shift out to 3rd to get it to my old shop.

Hi Klitch, yes it makes it to 4th (OD) the rsnmission shifts completely normal excdpt for the occasional time that it shifts into 3rd that third is the same as neutral (its not slipping in 3rd its just not there at all) It the same as if your were in neutral.

As long as you have accelerated enough and have enough speed bulilt up, backing off the throttle for just a second it shifts into 4th(OD) just normal though possibly with a louder thud or harsher shift if that makes sense. After doing so, if you accelerate any more it drops back into 3rd perfectly as it should.

by no means am i transmission savvy, but i would opt for checking the accumulator and its bore, perhaps a air test to see if theres a major leak somewhere. assuming there is no codes stored. a sticky solenoid may be the culprit as well?

your problem is slightly different than mine, and also more confidence inspiring to find a simpler fix. i dont have 3 or 4.

I'd drop the pan and inspect stuff like what's already been said. The fluid may look clean on the stick, but who knows what you might find in the bottom of the pan. When you put it back on, slap a new filter in there and replace the fluid that you drained with fresh Amsoil fluid. I don't really see the need at this time to drain the torque converter too.

Hey I just pulled the pan and valve body on my Mustang (AODE) and it was pretty simple to do , once you drop the pan there are 25 bolts that hold the valve body on, they are all of the bolts that have a washer as part of the bolt head. I can scan my instructions from the shift kit and post them if that would help.

No I wouldn't worry about that. I think I am going to buy an aftermarket valve body. I just need to figure out which one as It a stock application that eventually I will be towing a 5000 lb trailer.

I have not researched it yet, but I hope the aftermarket valve bodies all come with the solenoids and such.

Talk to Troyer Performance at 540-965-7126. They have an awesome valve body kit and can get you the solenoids if you ask. Their kit isn't too agressive and will help the transmission live longer by getting rid of slippage. This is great for towing.

I took the truck to my local auto parts store and the scanned for codes. None were showing. Is there a different procedure to pull transmission codes hidden codes and stored codes?

Auto parts stores don't have scanners that can pull tranny codes. I'm pretty sure you are going to have to take it to Ford or maybe a tranny shop.

I didn't think it would be so hard to get the codes. All the transmission shops want me to drop the truck off for at least 3 hours minimum, a couple wanted me to plan for them to have the truck the entire day. I don't have a spare vehicle right now so there is no way I'm doing that.

I will have to keep checking around to find one that can pull the codes without spending half a day at the shop waiting.

Where are you located? I am near the Indianapolis Indiana area and have the tools to pull the codes.
