limited reverse no forward gears aode/w

I just finished a rebuild on my aode/w tranny. Everything went back together fine. The tranny is still haveing the same problem. My reverse works when reved up. I have no forward gears. I jack the back end up and put into gear tires moved foreward slowly. The forward clutch pack was smoked so i replaced it. I do not have a pressure gauge but it does not look like it has the psi it should. Could this be the foreward solenoid?

There is no such thing as a forward solenoid, so we can elminate that as the cause.

It think your pressure is low for some reason. Most likely you've smoked your new forward and reverse clutches by trying to get it to operate on low pressure.

You may have a large internal leak or a worn out pump causing the low pressure.

I hope i didn't smoke those clutchs we didn't try to operate it for to long when we noticed a problem. Will i create more problems by doing a pressure test?

a pressure test won't hurt, buy if you try to drive half a mile with clutch slippage, you'll be pulling it out again.

Thank You for the responses it looks like i am gona go with the pressure test tonite and then most likely order a new pump. I am not ruling out a large internal leak but i think it is less likely than the pump. There will be more to follow

Didn't get the pressure test done last night. Couldn't find the right gauge. I found one that went up to 300psi and modified the ends with plumber fitting to match up with the tranny. I hope it works or gives at least some reading.

Alright i did the pressure test and all low about half of what they should have been. It occured to me that i never replaced my torque converter. There is a slight shutter and it was slow to engage in reverse when it did. I heard over and over to replace the coverter but i never listened. Could this be part of my problem? The pump did not have any apearence of falure and the front clutch packs are still new.

It could be part of the problem if it had debris in it from the failed trans. That bad stuff can find it's way into the trans and cause all sorts of problems. It could stick a main regulator valve, for instance, and cause low pressures.

When you check the pressures was it always at one pressure or did it move in each different gear and throttle position?

It changed between the gears. Should i just get a new pump and TC? Would it be obvious if there was a pump problem?

How can i check the main regulator valve? I do not want to put it back together and take it apart again.

There are two ways to check. One is to install a pressure gauge and read the pressures. The second is to remove the valve body and physically check the valve.

You already know what the pressure gauge is telling you.

It could also be debris in the Electronic Pressure Control (EPC) solenoid.

Do you mean the intermediate clutch piston fell out? If so, was this with or without the return spring/retainer in place?

On any rebuild the seals should all be replaced, the valve body needs to be taken completely apart and cleaned or replaced and the torque converer MUST be replaced. Not doing any one of those things will insure 100% that the transmission will be coming back out almost immediately.

Sorry to hear about the troubles.

I need more help with my diagnosis. I put it all back together new TC and all. Still almost no forward gears. When the truck is cold it will move forward slightly and when it warms up it doesn't go anywhere. What are the chances of it being the pump? I have a shift kit on the way with new springs for the valve body. I air checked the tranny when i had it apart and all pistons apeared to work properly. What could my problem be? I need a diagnosis and quick the snow is gona fall soon and my garage isn't heated.
