I have a 1997 F150, 5.4 L with auto transmission, 4X4, supercab. This truck has run pretty well and I just changed the plugs and COPs a couple weeks ago, and it has been really well since then.
Just this morning as I was leaving my house, I noticed that the tranny was much louder than normal. Not grinding, but just kind of whining, and maybe knocking a little. It only did it in 1st, and maybe 2nd gear. By the time it OD, it was smooth sailing, quiet as can be. It didn't really seem to do it in reverse. Fluid level checked ok, maybe even a little high, and it was clean. In park and neutral there was no problem.
Then tonight I drove it again and it made the same noise, but this time, when I'd come to a stop, the truck would actually die. Almost like the tranny or torque converter was working against the motor rather than the motor working through the tranny. Also, in first and even in second, it just doesn't seem to go well. Like it is having to work quite a bit to just move the truck. It is also doing it in reverse and when I got home tonight, I pulled into my driveway and put it in reverse, truck died. Did this several times in reverse and drive, and it would kill the truck.
Do you have a check engine light or is the light on your tranny selector on? What kind of plugs and cops did you use?
No, no check engine light or selector light on the shifter that I noticed. I'm going to drive it again today, so I'll pay close attention to both. I used Motorcraft plugs and the Global Automotive COPs (recommended by jbrew). They ran super smooth for a week or so before this problem, so I don't think that is it. Especially given the new noise that seems to be coming from the tranny. Also, once it hits 3rd gear, and overdrive, it runs as smooth as can be. So far as I can tell, the problem only exists in 1st, 2nd, and now reverse.
Also, as I get up to say 25 mph, it downshifts itself, so the rpms kick up quite a bit. Just sounds like it is headed south pretty quick.
As to the question posted in the other post, the fluid level is fine. Possibly even a little bit too high, but not by much if any. And it looks pretty clean.
Not sure if I posted this before, but there is about 115k miles.
Question - if I am looking at a rebuild, how much money am I looking to spend on one? Thanks.

I have a 2000 f150 and at 90,000 miles my tranny started acting up. I took it to a tranny guy and he was baffled. The codes it gave off didn't really help him. So I hated to do it, but I took it to Ford. They told me that the Tranny was shot and that I had 2 options. Rebuild or replace. They said it would cost just about as much to rebuild it as it would to buy one. If you buy one you get a 3 year 75k miles warranty. So I bought one....$3,000.00
