The way to do it right is not get a "flush" - get an "exchange" using a machine. The machine taps into the cooler lines and it uses the tranny pump with the engine running to draw the old fluid out and suck the new fluid in.

Sucking it out the dipstick is bogus - that only gets about 5 quarts out and the system holds about 14.

Most quick lube joints have that type of machine. Do NOT let them use a "flush" chemical, just do a complete exchange.

Had mine done at Ford for $140 and they use the machine and did not require to drop the pan or change the filter since our filter is made in metal and not paper.

That price is good considering a full fluid change as well as dropping the pan.

I had my filter changed once and had one flush. I will be doing another flush at the dealer pretty soon.

Oddly enough the local 3 dealers to me all do the flush method with a cleaning additive so I'll be doing it myself.

Unfortunately my wife's ford explorer sport trac is a closed system and they are doing her's Thursday for $200. I'm not happy about their BS fluid flush but I have no other option.

I had the exchange done last year, they did not drop the pan and it cost me about $100. That was at a local tire, brake, lube place.

From what I was told and what Ford is now using, synthetic would be the best.

The dealer around here has a contract with a company and doesn't want to drop the pan. I said screw that. Going to a local Transmission shop for mine

As long as the fluid meets Mercon V specs, you don't necessarily need synthetic.
