Question 1999: converting to automatic

Okay guys, here’s the deal. I’m getting tired of shifting and I now have kids of driving age. I want to convert my 1999 F150 from manual to auto. I used the search function and it appears there are a lot of people wanting to go from auto to manual, but not the other way around. What do I need to do this conversion?

I’m guessing a flexplate, TC, 4R70W, cooling lines, brake pedal, shift lever, and associated trim pieces around the steering wheel.

Will I need a new driveshaft?
Will my current radiator work?
What do I need to know about the dreaded shudder?
Is the truck pre-wired for the auto trans?
Will I need a new ECU or is there a separate trans control unit?

Thanks.

Yea I agree that alot of people do want the opposite. It looks like you are on track tho. If you're not in a rush, I would suggest a canidate that wants to swap everything over and you both would win. Could be risky but would be nice if you found a well taken care of swapped tranny. I dunno.

Good Luck

Yes, but you will need to add a trans cooler. A big one, because you won't have a cooler in the radiator.

All you need to know about shudder is to change ALL (or flush) the trans fluid with MERCON V at least every 30k miles. Then you won't have shudder.

Probably, but I'm not sure.

There are aftermarket controllers you could use, but the easier way, and probably cheaper, too, is to replace your PCM with one for an automatic.

man this is one of those instances when you should just sell the truck and buy an auto we converted my friend 99 from auto to 5spd and it was alot of work but going the other way will be twice as much work and posibly not even possible without complete wireing harness change

why not just teach your kids how to drive a stick maybe they would enjoy it it seems like about half the people i teach "friends and family" buy a car with a manual because they didnt know what they were missing out on

Teach the kids how to drive a stick, give them the truck, and get yourself a new one with an automatic!

That's what my sister did when her kid got his license - she had a 4Runner with a stick and she was tired of fighting rush hour - the kid got the 4Runner and she bought a Ranger with an auto.

Computer and complete wiring harness. Sticks are rare and desirable enough by us enthusiasts that I think you would have a much easier time selling and buying a common slushbox truck...

from guys that have swapped in 4r100 trannies with manual valve bodies, the automatic computer can be "tricked" for the manual swap but not vice versa

oh crap I read the thread backwards, my bad, yes, he'll need the computer and wiring for whatever tranny he gets (4r100 or 4r70)
