$90.00 dollar chage?

i called a tranny shop today and asked how much a filter/fluid chage would cost he said 90 bucks for fluid filter gasket and labor....and he said they do it the old fanison way? w/e that means he said they test drive it run the computer on it and make sure everythings good...but when i told him my tranny had never been serviced in its 130,000 mile life....he said well if its burnt ill just put the pan back on and leave it alone....i think this is a pretty good deal bc if they screw something up its on the shop....but Whats the old fanison way?? and how come he said he might not wanna do it after 130,000 miles??? Thanks for ur help

They will probably drop the pan and scrape off the old gasket. Then flush with new fluid until clean, add new gasket and fill with clean fluid. Those quicki-lube places just drain and refill, usually charge the same $90 too. Doesn't sound like a bad deal. But you can DIY for less $.

You need to get the fluid out of the converter as well with 130,000miles on the tranny. You should wait until you have the $150 to get the tranny completely flushed otherwise you are wasting your money.

His sig says 1997.

I believe there was a drain plug on the torque converters pre 2000.
That being said, my gasket was a reusable gasket on my 2000. I replaced it anyway with a new rubber gasket ($21 I think) and a filter $26.
The right shop will have a machine to pull the old fluid out.

If it shifts and runs fine with a 130,000 miles and having no prior service I would drop the pan yourself replace the filter and gasket (it is easy sometimes messy but easy). Check for crap in the bottom of the pan. Some fine particles are normal. Then take it in to Ford or a lube shop you trust and have a tranny flush to change out all the fluid.

ah i know i could do this my self but 90.00 bucks and if they screw up my truck they pay for it.... yes mine has the TQ converter drain on it...the final down shift at 10MPH it feels like the tranny disenages and then slams into 1st when im brakeing normal....if i lock up the brakes or down shift the truck my self it doesnt do it....other times the RPM's will just go up then it will slide into gear nice and easy....it will slip at WOT about once every 3 months depending on how much WOT i do.. fluid lvl is fine and color is fine no burning smell... yeah ill make sure when i take it up there he drains the TQ converter too.

Theres not a snowball's chance that "they'll pay for it" since the transmission, by your own admission to them, was neglected and was never serviced and is now failing.

You're dreaming if you think otherwise.

you are looking at more like 40-50 if you do it yourself

fluid can be bad without looking/smelling bad. the friction aditives in the fluid seperate out over time and with heat

Ask what type of fluids they use. Semi-synthetic? Synthetic? What brand? See if they can use Royal Purple or Lucas Oil. Ask if they will be willing to use fluids that you supply and knock a little off the cost. Get a few more estimates. Check with your local Ford dealer. At this time of the year, Ford dealerships around the country are running transmission service specials for as low as $89.95. My local Ford dealership charges for labor only when I supply the materials. A full flush on my truck was only $80 for 1 hour of labor. I supplied the Royal Purple ATF.

At your present mileage, also consider changing the gear oil in your differentials (front & rear), and your transfer case. I just did all of that stuff to my Explorer @ 200,000 miles. Believe me. It's like having a brand new truck all over again.

Yeah i was thinking about buying the fluid and filter and gasket and them just chargeing labor and seeing how much that would be. Yeah i know itd be cheaper doing it my self but these guys are pro's at trannys and ive alredy seen some of there work and its pretty good. Thanks for all your comments guys
