Transmission Slipping

for the last week or so my transmission seemed to be slipping! not very much but something i noticed! what could be causing this? i checked my transmission fluids and they came back good (warm at idle in park). if the truck hasnt had a transfusion or transmission filter change since leaving the factory could that be the problem?

How many miles on the truck? less than 30,000 i beleive that is the interval in the manual , On my 2001 4r70w I change it every 15000 miles which comes out to about every year...But i also drive my truck hard and it is 115 degrees out in the summer with in town stop and go traffic... The fluid is dark red and the magnet has some metals an it after 15000 so i would suspect that yours is toast if never changed and high mileage (By the way my change is filter, torque converter drained to get mostly fresh fluid)

now my question is.. with my truck being such a high mileage should i go to the stealorship and get a transfusion? so that i get all that old crap out?

Yes you should. Changing all of the fluid is the way to go.

$175 is the high side for a compete fluid and filter replacement. Since the Torque Converter is sealed, you need to take it to the shop and have the old fluid "sucked" out. The stealership will run specials on occasion, but these are the same people that will tell you everything else you need to replace too. I recommend you find a decent local mechanic and befriend him. You should go ahead and replace:
Plugs and wires
Serpentine Belt
Also know that ford recommends replacing the front control arms at 100K. The bushings are part of the control arm so the whole part gets replaced. I think they run about $125 for each side plus labor. Additionally you may want to spring for new shocks. I have my front end control arms replaced and new suspension all the way around at 115K. It felt like a new truck when I drove away and I got it all done for $900.

99's still had drain plugs in the torque converters. No need for a machine flush. You can do it yourself, drop the pan, change the filter, and drain the converter. Total cost for approx. 14 quarts of fluid and a filter kit should be in the 75 buck range.

You are also a candidate for replacing the rear differential fluid. I highly recommend replacing all your fluids with synthetics. Which brand to use is highly debated. I have Royal Purple fluids in my F150 transmission and rear differential & Lucas Oil fluids in my Explorer transmission, transfer case, front differential, and rear differential. No real preference. Just what I could get my hands on at the time and the price was right. I don't use Amsoil for the same reason that I don't brush my teeth with Amway toothpaste, buy my vitamins from Herbalife, et cetera.

Go for the full synthetic replacement oils. Your preference. Royal Purple, Amsoil, etc. That's all I use and get all kind of mileage out of my rides.
