mercon vs mercon V
Hi ! here's something that would really pissed you off. I had my ATF replaced 2 weeks ago and they used mercon. So I had it replaced at Ford. Guess what ? Its a good thing I went there to check the ATF they are also using is mercon. They told me that for models 1998-2004 its okay. They will only prohibit the use of mercon on 2005-2007 f150. They said that the reason why they do not initially use mercon V is because many of their comebacking customers are complaining with the cost. So to cope up with it they will use under specified ATF and Gear oil too. Its either there's not muh differrence between the two that's why they are willing to take the risk of a breakdown or they just don't care.
But I still love my F150 1999 xlt

Ford changed MERCON V recently to make it compatible with the older transmissions that used MERCON. Then they dropped MERCON.

Why Didn't Ford Do Away With Mercon Years Ago

Because they didn't.
MERCON V changed before Ford said it was good to use in the MERCON transmissions.
As for what percentage of MERCON V is synthetic, that depends on what company is making that fluid. For example, Mobil 1 synthetic ATF is MERCON V and is 100% synthetic. Other MERCON V fluids have less than 100% synthetic.

I work for a Ford dealer and the final word is it is ok to use MerconV in any vehicle with Mercon in it. THe one you DO NOT mix is Mercon SP. That's for the new Torque shift transmissions. Bad things happen when you put that in the older units.
